A testament to the pioneering spirit brought by the wave of immigrants who travelled across great distances to seek their fortunes and forge new lives. Such is the history of Bendigo Pottery, started by a Scottish settler in the s in Bendigo, in the state of Victoria. Originally, Bendigo was a gold rush boom town attracting plenty of miners looking to seek out their share of the boom.
After a failed search for gold, the fortunes of Glaswegian George Duncan Guthrie reversed when he unearthed a deposit of fine white clay, giving birth to one Australias most illustrious and oldest working potteries.

George Guthrie, the founder of the Bendigo pottery, began his first pottery business, Camperdown Pottery, in Sydney in His most successful product was ginger beer bottles. Following a downturn in the market, Guthrie moved to Melbourne and then to Sandhurst later called Bendigo on the Victorian goldfields, where a superior white clay had been discovered. For every gold mining ghost town there are prosperous cities like Bendigo which wear their gold weath with both pride and ostentation. Bendigo can proudly boast that it has one of the finest collections of Victorian buildings of any inland city in Australia. The streets are literally awash with huge granite edifices and, in the centre of the city, a fountain dedicated to Queen Victoria’s daughter-in-law, Princess Alexandra, sits in the main street.
This is a hugely impressive city which, if you want to do it justice, requires two or three days of dedicated exploration. Bendigo is the only Australian town named after a boxer. In the s there was a world-famous English boxer named Abednego William Thompson.

It is marked Bendigo Pottery, has a handle and on the top of the rim several small holes set out in a square, maybe a strainer for tea.
I cannot see any other marks. The lid has a tiny heart on it.
